Angie’s husband Mike, an advertising executive, returns home from his first day in a new job with worrying news for Angie. His new boss, Ted Scott and his wife are bridge fanatics and have invited them to their home to play cards. They have never played although Mike said they did, otherwise he would not have got the job. Mike tries unsuccessfully to cancel the evening, but his excuses and fibs escalate with amusing results. The play is about avoiding bridge rather than playing it.
